6. Drake - Degrassi: The Next Generation

Yep, he was an actor too. Before he was best known as a rapper, Drake starred in Canadian high-school TV drama Degrassi: The Next Generation between 2001 and 2009. The show was about a group of students at Degrassi High who faced the usual dramas of growing up - as teen pregnancy, bullying, date rape, drugs, body image, sexuality, gang violence, mental disorders and many more.

His eight years playing teenage athlete Jimmy Brooks who was confined to a wheelchair after a school shooting clearly helped him with the later rigours of the rap scene.

And as an ironic note to a show that often explored teenage drug abuse, Drake later admitted on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that he was high when he auditioned for the role:

“It was the first audition I went on, and it was a real pivotal day of my life because but it was also the day that I got accepted by these real cool Jewish kids at school. They were finally like, ‘yo, come over.' And I had this tug-of-war moment where I did something I shouldn’t have done, that starts with ‘w’ and ends with ‘eed,'”

Because he'd never done it before, he freaked out, which makes his successful audition all the more impressive, to be honest:

“I started really getting paranoid. I thought I’d ruined my whole life. I was splashing water on my face constantly, it was like a Clearasil commercial. I showed up to the audition, and got just a little less paranoid, and did what I could. I was devastated, and couldn’t tell my mom, but I ended up getting a call back and getting the role.”
