12 Alternative Movies We're Sick Of Hearing Are Set At Christmas
8. Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands is mostly remembered today as Johnny Depp's breakout role and the film that transformed him from teen heartthrob to the living embodiment of Tim Burton's creative vision. Edward Scissorhands is, at it's heart, a story about being different in small town suburbia and comes to the bittersweet conclusion that some people are better off on their own. The picture of community in Edward Scissorhands is ambiguous at best: for every friendly Avon lady there are bullies, predatory housewives and, eventually, a literal mob. Not exactly your usual tale of togetherness and seasonal goodwill. That said, the image of fragile, clumsy Edward using his scissor hands to carve intricate ice sculptures and showering the town in tiny chips of ice as delicate as snowflakes is as heartwarming as it is striking, making it perhaps unsurprising that many people associate this film with Christmas.
