12 Amazing Premises Wasted On Underwhelming Horror Films

10. Sadako Vs. Kayako

Brightburn Elizabeth Banks
Kadokawa

Premise: The ghosts of the Ring and Grudge franchises (the Japanese versions) face off

This was teased as an April Fools joke in April 2015, but was later confirmed to be a real production.

It's certainly a rather irresistible concept and felt like exactly what both these franchises needed given the creative slump they'd been in for ages, but unfortunately Sadako Vs. Kayako is just very 'meh'.

It's not the worst film you'll ever watch but it's just a bog-standard ghost story in the end that isn't very scary at all. The similar Freddy Vs Jason just about worked because it tapped into the camp, silly potential of the story but this one has no such self-awareness and plays this fairly ridiculous story completely straight and this undermines the entire film. The ending is very annoying as well.
