12 Annoying Fanboy Complaints That Drive Everyone Insane

4. "The Character Wouldn't Do That..."

The Complaint: "Having read all the source material, expanded universe novelisations and fan fiction, I know more about the character than the filmmakers, and can unequivocally tell you that their portrayal was way off the mark. He just wouldn't do that..." Why It's Annoying: Because, as a fan, you don't have ownership over these characters nor the last word on what they would or wouldn't do. Take everyone's favourite recent example, in Man of Steel, where Superman (Henry Cavill) killed Zod (Michael Shannon) at the end to save a number of humans. Many argued that Superman flat-out "wouldn't do that", but the whole point of the scene was that Zack Snyder wanted to challenge the black-and-white ideals of classic comics and bring them into the real, modern world. This version of Superman isn't the exact same Superman from the comics or from previous adaptations: he's shaped by pop-culture and the world as a whole, and that's something to be grateful for. There are, admittedly, some noted examples where this seems on the money: a lot of people criticised Prometheus for its scientist characters doing things that scientists never do, but in terms of attributes for iconic characters like Superman, it's best to take a step back and reconsider how much you really know about this version of the character.
