12 Australian Films You Must See Before You Die

4. The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert

This hilarious journey to the outback with a transvestite, homosexual and drag queen is a film that like many on this list, is full of heart and charm while also addressing tough issues in an extremely open way. Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and a brilliantly over the top Guy Pearce play the 'fabulous' threesome who take to the outback on old bus and encounter misadventures along the way.

The film utilises its dramatic tonal shifts to its advantage, moving from out right hilarity to outright moving without missing a beat. Extravagant outfits and spectacular dance routines set to a soundtrack from heaven bring amazing energy and is what makes the movie truly buzz.

But it's the character studies that really make the film work, with issues of grief, family, acceptance and of course sexuality handled with care while never patronising the audience with untruths. A near rape scene goes a little too far, but seeing what kind hearted people have to deal with just for being themselves adds weight to the story rather than dragging its upbeat tone down. And for a film made in 1994, it was way ahead of its time.
