12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

8. The Grand Budapest Hotel

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92% (8.4 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: Easily one of Wes Anderon's best films to date (and that's really saying something), The Grand Budapest Hotel is a visually stunning, hilarious and brilliantly-acted comedy that finds the director delivering on everything that made him famous, but without most of the obnoxious, self-conscious flourishes that even his fans might find a little much. What's really surprising about the film, though, is that it's decidedly more adult than most of the director's movies, featuring one memorably gruesome scene that's at once stomach-churning and hilarious. The cast is stupid good, including Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Wilkinson and Owen Wilson, for Christ's sake! Why It Won't Get Nominated: Despite almost all of his films enjoying strong critical acclaim, not a single one of Anderson's features has racked up a Best Picture nomination, and as such it would appear that AMPAS voters just don't really like his work enough to give him more than an Original Screenplay nod (which is what fans can expect at best this time as well). Even though the array of beloved older actors appearing in the film does give it a boost with that voter demographic, it likely won't be enough for them to include it in their preferred 9 or 10 films.
