8. Gerald McRaney - The Best Of Me
The Movie: Quite probably the worst of all the Nicholas Sparks adaptations to date (and certainly the least successful, both critically and commercially), The Best of Me delivers on every insipid expectation of a Sparks novel, as well as a gut-bustingly hilarious twist ending that veers dangerously close to unintended self-parody. The Performance: Nicholas Sparks adaptations do have a history of providing decent fatherly roles for older actors, such as Richard Jenkins in Dear John, and this movie is no exception. In the film's abundance of flashbacks, Gerald McRaney plays Tuck Hostetler, a bereaved, kindly local mechanic who takes protagonist Dawson (Luke Bracey) under his wing and helps him make something of himself. It's a small but effective part, and pretty much the only aspect of the movie that actually, totally works. It's a shame his character dies in the present scenes so he can't be a bigger part of the movie, though.
