12 Awesome 2014 Performances In Otherwise Awful Movies

9. Mel Gibson - The Expendables 3

The Movie: The third entry into the hit action franchise is without question the worst, a PG-13-rated, tame action flick that focuses far too much on the new team of young Expendables while throwing many of the iconic cast members to the side. It's not without the occasional fun one-liner, but it's mostly a terrible disappointment. The Performance: Mel Gibson may be struggling to find serious roles for himself these days, but he's always going to be a welcome presence in movies like this, especially if he's playing the part of the scenery-chewing bad guy. Just as he was the best thing about 2013's Machete Kills, Gibson is extremely effective here as Conrad Stonebanks, a former Expendable who wishes to take Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team out for good. The stand-out scene is without question when Stonebanks has been captured by the Expendables and delivers a savagely entertaining monologue to Ross about the nature of their work. For everything that falls flat in this movie, Gibson totally throws himself into the role, but it's a shame his final showdown with Ross is a relatively weak departure for such a great character.
