When compared to X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and the rest of 2014's big summer hits, Godzilla had pretty low expectations. Wounds of the previous Americanisation of Gojira, the Roland Emmerich directed 1998 atrocity, still twinged, while the appointment of Gareth Edwards behind the camera seemed rather ill informed; his previous film may have been called Monsters, but it really wasn't a monster movie. All that changed with this impressive trailer that wowed the internet back in December 2013. Showing a group of marines participating in a night-time sky dive into San Francisco, making way to a quick flash of destruction, it had a palpable sense of dread. The final shot, revealing the titular monster hidden behind a thick cloud of dust, was all that was needed to bump this up to the most anticipated film of the year. The whole of Godzilla's marketing campaign was pretty tight-lipped, with much of the film's plot remaining under wraps, but this trailer was the exemplar element, teasing an idea rather than the film itself. You could argue that in playing into the hype, putting the focus on the often absent King of Monsters and hiding the early death of Bryan Cranston's character, the film shot itself in the foot, but that doesn't make the trailer any less awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjKO10hKtYw
