If you venture to certain areas of the internet J.J. Abrams is tantamount to the devil. His reboot of the Star Trek franchise took the geek milestone and gave it a new lick of paint, creating an off-shoot universe that allowed for new story developments and a Star Wars sheen. But while to a mainstream audience this gave a fun and accessible entry point into the adventures of the crew of the Enterprise, to more die-hard fans this was a betrayal the the very ethos of the meditative franchise. Anyone who thinks Abrams (who is much more a Wars-y than a Trekkie) didn't get Star Trek, however, need look no further than the teaser trailer for his first film to see how wrong they are. Showing various shots of the Enterprise under construction to the sound of various sound clips from the history of space travel, the trailer bursts into the iconic music for the final reveal, creating hype for something long deemed obsolete. It doesn't even feature a title card, which tells that this is a big deal. And, of course, merely stating the film would be a prequel, there's nothing in the way of story beats, which only strengthens the effect. The teaser for the sequel wasn't as slight. Basically giving fans all they needed to figure out Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan and ruining the big third act set piece, the trailer showed none of the deftness of the first's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkZFWr0vR8Q
