12 Awesome Summer 2018 Movies You Probably Missed

3. The Tale

The Tale Laura Dern
Untitled Entertainment

If it wasn't snapped up by HBO following its premiere at Sundance, The Tale would probably be a front-runner for several Oscars right now.

The devastating drama sees writer-director Jennifer Fox dramatise her own childhood sexual abuse and her realisation of such as an adult, topped by a career-best performance from the brilliant Laura Dern.

What's most admirable about this movie is how authentic it feels: even Fox's rapist, played with restrained brilliance by Jason Ritter, feels fleshed-out and far away from the caricature these types of people are usually depicted as.

It's incredibly queasy viewing, as it should be, but as a startling look at innocence lost and a filmmaker digging deep into their own personal trauma, The Tale is one of the year's most fascinating dramas.
