12 Awesome Summer 2018 Movies You Probably Missed
2. Lean On Pete
Writer-director Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years) continues his run of subdued, rewarding films for patient audiences with this utterly heartbreaking drama about a young boy (Charlie Plummer) who starts working at a stable where he cares for an aged racehorse.
Plummer gives one of the year's best low-key performances, a haunting picture of troubled youth that's both enormously touching and almost relentlessly bleak.
Steve Buscemi, Chloƫ Sevigny and Travis Fimmel impress in memorable supporting roles, and while Lean on Pete isn't a feel-good sit by any means, it is a rich, deeply-felt film and admirably avoids caving in to sentimental trappings.
Have something frothy and forgettable to watch afterwards, though, because you're probably gonna need it.
