Iron Man star Robert Downey Junior’s personal life has vacillated between extremes, but even as the star succumbed to personal demons throughout the decades his output remained largely superb onscreen.

Not unlike River Phoenix, Downey managed to avoid allowing his addiction to affect his acting, resulting in staggering turns in films as varied as 1987’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation Less Than Zero and 1993’s biopic Chaplin.

However with newfound sobriety came a string of duds which must have left Downey wondering whether he had a career left to revive, and 2003’s grim supernatural thriller Gothika represented the nadir of this period. The Kiss Kiss Bang Bang actor stars as a character one critic argued “could have been named Red Herring”, and his relatively solid performance isn’t enough to salvage this tasteless, over-the-top Halle Berry starring shocker.
