12 AWFUL Sequels That Made More Money Than Blade Runner 2049

2. Independence Day: Resurgence

Independence Day Resurgence Bill Pullman
Fox

Box Office: $389.7 million

It may have fallen far short of the original 1996 film's astonishing $817.4 million gross, but the long-gestating sci-fi follow-up still easily doubled its $165 million budget, and by pandering to China with some shoehorned Chinese characters, managed to gross over $75 million from the country alone.

After two decades in development, Resurgence was the most lazy and tiresome of sequels, a feckless rehash that recycled a lot of the original's ideas but without the same charm, and also without Will Smith of course.

Jeff Goldblum is trying to elevate things, but from Bill Pullman's disappointingly flat rallying speech to the mediocre action, it's a sci-fi sequel that totally deserved to bomb. At least its disappointing box office means a third film isn't likely.
