6. Mr Church

IMDb Rating: 7.7

Each year there’s a few movies that are clearly made to be awards bait. They’re usually based on a true story, and it might feature a comedy or action star in a super dramatic role. Collateral Beauty surely tops the list for being the most blatant example of a failed awards contender – though the Razzies will surely give it some nods – but Mr Church will fit on that countdown too.

It was meant to be Eddie Murphy’s triumphant comeback after years away from the big screen, where he’d make amends for decades of terrible comedies by acting his guts out. To be fair he’s actually really good, but Mr Church is also a lukewarm drama that plays like an earnest TV movie, and there’s a reason it vanished without trace.

That didn’t prevent it getting a 7.7, placing it higher than Sully or Martin Scorsese’s Silence.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
