12 Best 1990s Sci-Fi Movies
5. Men In Black
Both the buddy flick and sci-fi in general had always appealed to audiences, so when Men in Black decided to combine the two and throw the world's biggest movie star into the mix for good measure, success was almost guaranteed from the off.
In the long and storied history of mismatched bickering partners, the double-act between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones has to rank up there as one of the greatest, with the pair's crackling chemistry acting as the driving force behind the story while also serving up plenty of laughs in the process.
Men in Black was also surprisingly ambitious for a mid-90s studio blockbuster, sneaking in some subtext through the idea of registering and regulating aliens, without being too on-the-nose thanks to a whip-smart script. The movie never overstays its welcome at a brief 98 minutes, and the subpar sequels and spinoff just went to show how well the first installment managed to capture lightning in a bottle the first time round.
