2. Everybody Wants Some!!

Greasy Strangler
Paramount Pictures

If Goat’s hazing was a bit too harrowing a reminiscence about college days, then Richard Linklater’s latest movie is a much more amiable and gentler trip down memory lane. Dubbed the spiritual sequel to his 1993 cult comedy Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some!! switches the action from a 1970s high school to university in the early 1980s.

Like its predecessor though, it focuses on a group of young ‘uns on the cusp of adulthood and is every bit as charming and nostalgic too. And like Dazed, Slacker and Boyhood before it not much goes on plot-wise in Everybody Wants Some!!, at least on the surface. Linklater’s films of this ilk are more like snapshots of ordinary, relatable people at ordinary, relatable – yet nevertheless significant – milestones in their lives.

Much of the movie’s success is owed to its likeable, natural cast of relatively unknown actors. And, of course, for the 80s throwbacks out there the retro soundtrack and fashion are a nostalgic treat for the senses.
