6. Tallulah

Greasy Strangler
Netflix

Adapted from Orange Is the New Black writer Sian Heder’s 2006 short film Mother, Tallulah reunites Juno actresses Ellen Page and Allison Janney in a funny, touching comedy drama about motherhood and responsibility.

Page stars as the titular character, a free-spirited young woman living out of a van with her boyfriend Nico. When he suddenly leaves her she heads to New York City where his estranged mother Margo, played by Janney, lives hoping to find him.

He isn’t there, so she goes to a hotel to scrounge for food where a mix up finds her babysitting the neglected toddler of a rich, alcoholic mother. Concerned for the kid’s safety, she ends up accidentally abducting the toddler and returns to Margo’s apartment to hideout claiming the child is hers and Nico’s.

Child abduction might not sound like the most amusing premise for a movie, but with Heder’s script and direction alongside the chemistry between Page and Janney it’s a funny, warm and often sad indie film well worth watching.
