7. The Greasy Strangler

About as black a comedy as black comedy gets, British director Jim Hosking’s feature debut The Greasy Strangler tells the weird, crass and often off-putting tale of a dysfunctional father-son duo – crabby geriatric Ronnie and his browbeaten, man-child spawn Brayden – who run disco walking tours in a crappy Los Angeles neighbourhood.

Their already strange but co-dependent relationship gets weirder when they both fall for the same woman and start vying for her affections. But this isn’t just an oddball family drama. By night, Ronnie becomes the titular character: a serial killer who slathers his naked body in lard before going out and strangling people to death. The clue’s in the title.

Best described as a reimagining of Steptoe and Son if it was directed by King of Bad Taste John Waters and produced by Troma, the film is brimming with gross-out humour from beginning to end with full-frontal nudity, a barrage of puerile fart jokes and more grease than a chip shop drip tray.

Despite quite possibly being 2016’s most gross and bizarre film, critics managed to find worth in its camp bad taste and awarded it a very respectable (considering its content) 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
