6. Quiz Show

Hank Azaria Mystery Men
Buena Vista Pictures

Another Hank Azaria starring film in this Robert Redford directed movie that explores the rigging of 1950's quiz show Twenty-One on US Television. Azaria stars as Albert Freeman, one of the producers for Twenty-One, who decides that rigging the events of the quiz will be a major benefit for ratings.

Ralph Fiennes stars as Charles Van Dorren, an Abe Simpson like character who profits from the rigged nature of the show. But unlike Abe who got off scot free after ratting out his fellow contestants, Van Dorren admitted to fault in front of a congressional committee. Van Dorren wasn't charged for his involvement, but did lose lucrative Television contracts and a lot of respect.

The movie explores Van Dorren's initial unease and gradual willingness to participate in the rigged nature of the show, with his high earnings and profile allowing him to push his conscience aside. The film's final act moves to the congressional hearings exploring the potential fixing of the show's results, with cover ups galore allowing the masterminds behind the scandal to avoid the fallback.

Despite being receiving overwhelming positive reviews, the film proved to be a box office bomb, its premise lacking in excitement to entice viewers in. It's a great shame, as the story is riveting throughout and littered with top class performances, including from none other than Martin Scorsese in a rare acting role.
