The second entry from Yeardley 'Lisa' Smith, who appears in this sleeper hit as Nancy, who falls pregnant after having an affair with her boss Phil. This is one of a number of challenges faced by our male protagonists, Mitch, Phil and Ed, who find themselves in various stages of a mid-life crisis when they sign up for a two week cattle drive from New Mexico to Colorado.

It is here where our protagonists meets the trail boss Curly, a grizzled old cowboy with a heart of gold. Jack Palance steals every scene he's in, the hardened exterior hiding the wisdom of a man who has seen it all. The middle act sees him teach our protagonists a thing or two before he surprisingly bows out of the film from a sudden heart attack.

The movie then switches gears, with Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby stepping up to the plate as the city slickers who look to complete the delivery of the cattle as promised. All three stare down their fears in their attempts to pull off the impossible and complete the trail on their own, the audience cheering them on till the climactic finale.

The film works thanks to the believable foibles the middle aged men face, Stern and Crystal getting the right balance between comedy and genuine emotion in their portrayals. Palance though is the star, the decision to kill his character off one the producers clearly regretted, with Palance returning for the sequel as Curly's twin brother.
