12 Best Performances In 2017 Films (So Far)

1. Hugh Jackman – Logan

Split James McAvoy The Beast
20th Century Fox

We couldn’t mention Logan without also praising the blistering performance of its star Hugh Jackman. By far the very best of Wolverine’s three solo films, both Logan and Jackman’s performance are a befittingly brilliant swansong to the character he’s played for the better part of the last two decades.

Grizzled and faltering in his old age, Logan is a timeworn superhero well past his glory days and affectionately infused with both weariness and brutality but also a sense of humanity by Jackman, made all the more touching by the chemistry he shares with co-stars Patrick Stewart and Dafne Keen.

It’s the best we’ve ever seen of Wolverine – so good in fact, that there’s already talk of a Best Actor Oscar nomination in line for Jackman. Of course, for that to happen the Academy would have to get over their aversion to superhero movies, but us Hugh Jackman fans can dream.
