5. Michael Fassbender – Alien: Covenant

Split James McAvoy The Beast
Fox

Michael Fassbender reprised his Prometheus role as creepy synthetic David 8 in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant this year also taking on the part of Walter, a crewmember of the Covenant colony ship and an upgraded synthetic based on the David model who bears a striking physical resemblance to his predecessor (obviously).

It’s a dual role that Fassbender clearly revels in, playing out the good twin versus bad twin scenario with relish. As Walter he’s duty-driven, gentlemanly and almost affable if it weren’t for his likeness to his evil counterpart and as David he’s erudite, narcissistic, sinister and one of the best villains we’ve seen for a good while.

In fact, for all Alien: Covenant’s satisfyingly gory spectacle – facehuggers, chestbursters, Xenomorphs and the like – it’s scenes with David or with Walter and David, especially that homoerotic twincest flute scene, that make for some of the movie’s best moments.
