4. Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out

Split James McAvoy The Beast

Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out was the smash hit of this year’s first quarter, grossing $251.3 million worldwide on a very modest budget of just $4.5 million.

A comedy-horror hybrid fusing themes from The Stepford Wives and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?, the movie cleverly riffs on America’s racial tensions and boasts a stellar performance by British actor Daniel Kaluuya as protagonist Chris.

Anyone who’s seen Kaluuya in previous roles like Charlie Brooker’s dark, dystopian satire Black Mirror or Denis Villeneuve’s crime drama Sicario can testify to his talents, but Get Out’s Chris is undoubtedly his breakout role.

It’s a career-best performance that’s understated, nuanced and arresting throughout as his character goes from disbelief to horror as he realises his paranoia is fully justified and has Kaluuya firmly pegged as a star in the making.
