3. Anne Hathaway – Colossal

Split James McAvoy The Beast
NEON

Anne Hathaway has always been a little on the twee side for many moviegoer’s tastes, but her latest performance in genre-bending Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo sci-fi comedy mash-up Colossal has had even her biggest detractors willingly eating their words.

She plays against type as unemployed blogger Gloria – a alcoholic loser kicked out of her New York City apartment after her boyfriend dumps her who moves back to her hometown to get back on her feet and realises her drunken blackouts and unresolved issues are manifesting as a Godzilla-like monster several thousand miles away in Seoul.

It’s a typically offbeat Vigalondo beast fusing rom-com and kaiju, but Hathaway plays her part with total conviction with a sympathetic and funny performance that makes her flawed, millennial loser turned unlikely hero wholly likeable.
