From maximalist Hollywood excess to minimalist Canadian arthouse, comes this slice of late-90s sci-fi horror that at times plays more like a predecessor to Black Mirror than something along the lines of Saw, which it's often compared to (and not without reason).

Cube tells the story of six disparate strangers who find themselves in the titular room, one of thousands in a seemingly endless structure of shifting, elevator-like rooms that are filled with all manner of gruesome death traps. They don't know how they got there, or why, or even where "here" is; all they know is they have to get out.

Cube is perfect minimalist storytelling, it's a group of characters trapped in a space together and all the claustrophobia and slow-burn psychosis that that entails. In other words, it's the perfect movie for being stuck indoors with nowhere to go and no end in sight. The filmmakers do an excellent job of working within the limited space to create a sense of tension (never has entering a room with differently-colored lights been so nerve-wracking), and the ensemble cast does a great job portraying the sheer magnitude of terror and desperation.

Cube is certainly more cerebral than your average sci-fi horror, but if you like said horror slow-burn and psychological, than this is the film for you.
