5. Ghost In The Shell

Major Motoko Kusanagi Ghost In The Shell
Shochiku

Another anime, and this one also falling squarely into the cyberpunk genre. And what else can you call it, but another masterpiece? Like Akira before it, Ghost shows audience a fully and beautifully realized future world so immaculately detailed and lovingly rendered it rises to the peak of its medium. There's a constant haze of over-bright fluorescence and ghostly ambiance, every single shot pulses with this white glow, and it creates a startlingly beautiful sense of reality.

Though only 82 minutes long, the world-building on display is incredibly dense but never feels overwrought or overwhelming. All of this built around a tightly-wound narrative with a slow, steady build of tension and mood leading to a memorable climax and a hauntingly ambiguous conclusion.

On top of that, the film is jam-packed with more philosophical ideas and quandaries than most live-action films twice it's length. Top that with one of the most memorable and iconic anime protagonists of all time in Major Motoko Kusanagi, and you have both a great animated film and a great science fiction story. The 2017 remake has nothing on this.
