12 Biggest Box Office Flops Of 2017 (So Far)
3. A Cure For Wellness
Going by director Gore Verbinski’s last horror outing – 2002
J-Horror remake The Ring, a hit with critics and a box office smash too – hopes
were high for A Cure for Wellness which reunited him with The Ring’s talented
cinematographer Bojan Bazelli.
And to give Bazelli credit where it’s due A Cure for Wellness is visually gorgeous and makes much use of its centuries old German castle setting, but that’s about where the positives end dampened by a derivative plot that regurgitates overused trop after overused trope.
Prior to its release 20th Century Fox’s marketing campaign, which involved the creation of several fake news sites that published phony stories around politically charged issues like President Trump’s Putin connections and abortion alongside oblique references to the movie, irked quite a few and drew a lot of criticism.
Whether its sly promotional tactics or unoriginal plot were to blame for its box office failings we’ll never know for sure, but moviegoers rewarded it with an unimpressed $26.6 million in profits against its $40 million budget.
