11. The Force "Penetrates Us"

The Lie

According to Obi-Wan Kenobi; "...the Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together."

The Truth

Some of that is true, but there's some issue around the "penetrates us" point specifically. Thanks to George Lucas' scientific over-explanation of Force sensitivity in terms of midi-chlorians, Obi-Wan's famous statement can't be read as a spiritual one any more: he's being scientific, and in that respect he's being a little wrong.

The truth built on the idea of midi-chlorians is that the Force interacts with the tiny super-intelligent organisms within the host's cells. They interpret the will of the Force and translate it for those sensitive enough to hear them: that's markedly different to the idea of penetration.

Come to think of it, the Force doesn't bind the galaxy together either. That's gravity.
