12 Biggest Retcons In Star Wars Movie History
4. Rey's Parents Don't Actually Matter
How ever you feel about the revelation that Rey's parents were nobodies (it was a good twist), there's no getting around the fact that it was a bit of an unreasonable rug pull that stuck a big middle finger up to fans.
You could claim that it was done intentionally to add weight to the revelation, but it didn't earn the twist because The Force Awakens absolutely sets up Rey's identity being important and being a future plot point.
During her first encounter with BB-8, she asks the droid where it came from and when it beeps a reply, she says "Classified, really? Me too, big secret." It's fine for that to be a red herring, but it's not right for the huge secret to be that there actually isn't one, especially as Rey is supposed to know at this point in her heart.
That definitely feels like conscious retconning. Let's hope that it turns out that Kylo Ren was lying to her to try and turn her to his dark agenda, if only for the coherence of the story-telling in The Last Jedi.
