Variety reported that though Universal didn’t show any footage from the musical, the crowd was still severely impressed with Cats. Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Miserable) directs Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, and Ian McKellen in the screen adaptation of the infamous Broadway show.

Universal presented behind the scenes footage that showed the actors dancing with leotards specially outfitted to be used for motion capture. Hooper exclaimed that they’re breaking out “digital fur technology” as well as building sets three-four times larger than normal, as the cats will be the size of average house-cats.

Dame Judi Dench explained, “We spent a very, very long time preparing how to be a cat,” as Hamilton crew Andy Blankenbuehler choreographed the film. The studio told the Cinema Con audience that the visual effects are so complicated that they still have nothing of the final film to present.

Universal will bring Cats to theatres December 20, 2019.

If you talk in a theatre I'm in, be prepared to get some pretty passive aggressive stares.
