12 Blatant Copycat Movie Pairs (And Which Was Better)
6. K-9 & Turner & Hooch
Everyone loves a buddy cop movie and when one of those buddies is
of a canine persuasion it’s a guaranteed winning formula, right? Well, that
wasn’t quite the case with copycat comedies K-9 and Turner & Hooch which
received a rather lukewarm reception after they were released in 1989.
Nevertheless, they’re both mildly entertaining films in which unwilling police detectives are partnered with cute canine co-stars (a German shepherd in K-9’s case and a slobbery Dogue de Bordeaux in Turner & Hooch) who actually do more of the crime-solving than their human counterparts (John Belushi and Tom Hanks).
Which One Was Better?
Sorry to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen either film (which you really should’ve by now since they’re trotted out every bank holiday and festive season), but K-9’s hound survives the movie’s shootout finale whereas Turner & Hooch go the tearjerker route by killing off the dog at the end which is a bit of hackneyed trope.
Then again, Turner & Hooch boasts the more bankable and likeable in Tom Hanks and an ever so slightly cuter dog (played by the late, great Beasley) so we’ll declare it the winner by a small margin.
