For an old hand like Anthony Hopkins getting to the heart of a character must come naturally and considering the veteran actor’s experience, his directors seem more than happy to let him put his own spin on their scripts.

In fact, in Hopkins’ best known role as cannibal Hannibal Lecter – for which he went on to win and Oscar for Best Actor despite only being on screen for around 20 or so minutes - the actor improvised the creepy slurping, sucking sound Hannibal makes after uttering the immortal line "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti."

Hopkins once again brought his talent for ad-libbing to the movie Thor as the titular superhero’s father Odin during a scene in which he banishes his son to Earth. At the request of director Kenneth Branagh, Hopkins improvised his character’s part hurt, part furious reaction to Thor’s yelling in an emotional moment that reportedly reduced several members of the cast and crew to tears.

Lots of daddy issues on that set then.
