12 Controversial Horror Movies That Shocked The World

10. Freaks

One of the silent era€™s great horror treasures, Freaks was basically a circus freak-show captured on film. Even after 80 years, the film is still called one of the most macabre and fascinating films ever made, with actual deformed carnival people cast in the main roles, and the film€™s unflinching emphasis upon humanising the €˜freaks€™ as the good guys whilst antagonising the €˜normal€™ people. As this was released in 1932, the public weren€™t exactly on board for €˜circus freaks€™ portraying the good guys. Worse was the public€™s outrage that actual deformed people were being shown before their very eyes on the big screen. Even after some cuts and changes in an attempt to €˜salvage€™ the film, Freaks was clouded with enough negative press and controversy for all movie-goers to shy away. The film eventually got the final laugh as it has been entered into the National Film Registry to be preserved forever.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
