12 Controversial Horror Movies That Shocked The World

9. Night Of The Living Dead

With zombies being a pop-culture staple and audiences becoming increasingly desensitised to blood and gore these days, it's easy to forget how influential and controversial George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead was when it was released in 1968. Considered the first film to depict a modern day 'zombie', Romero's film was ahead of its time and involved a couple who are trapped in a farmhouse which is under attack by an increasing mob of zombies. Despite being quite tame when compared to gore-fests like The Walking Dead shows, the film's depiction of zombies attacking people caused uproar with audiences as it was released before MPAA censorship and kids weren't barred from watching the film. Needless to say, a considerable number of children were mentally scarred upon the film's release and parents weren't particularly happy about it. It's quite interesting to see how far society has come since Romero unleashed the zombie craze onto the world nearly fifty years ago. People in minimal make up and walking with a dead-eyed expression was considered terrifying back then whilst seeing a character being gruesomely torn to bits on TV is considered the norm nowadays.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
