12 Controversial Movie Endings That Came Out Of Nowhere

8. 9/11 - Remember Me

The ending to now-forgotten romantic drama, Remember Me, has got to be one of the strangest and most ill-judged endings of all-time on account of its sheer randomness alone; watching it, you wonder why the filmmakers bothered to go down this route. Remember Me stars Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin as couple who come together after bad things happen in their respective lives. The movie - made in 2010 - is set in 2001, which - at the start of the film - seems like a strange choice with no clear narrative reasoning behind it. Cue fairly generic drama movie. Just when you think you've seen it all, though, the ending kicks in - and boy is it a doozy (and not in a good way). The reason the movie was set in 2001? So that Robert Pattinson's character could die in 9/11. Seriously: at the end of the movie, the camera pans back to reveal Pattinson standing in the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. We then learn that he died in infamous terrorist attack. A truly unexpected and highly controversial twist, because who decides to use 9/11 as a half-assed plot device? There's a unmistakably awkward exploitive feel to it.
