12 Controversial Movie Endings That Came Out Of Nowhere

7. Filicide - The Mist

The Mist, based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, hones in on a group of people who find themselves trapped in a supermarket after a terrible storm leaves their town covered in a thick layer of mist. Unfortunately for them, the mist is the result of an experiment gone wrong, and inside there are horrific monsters lurking, ready to kill. After surviving the events of the film with his son and a few stragglers in tow, David (Thomas Jayne) drives out in the mist - at which point the group are made aware that a huge monster is approaching, and that their best bet is to commit suicide. One by one, they shoot themselves with a handgun, until only David and his son are remaining. David kills his son, and just as he's about to do himself, the U.S. army emerge from the mist and bring the monster down. David, of course, is inconsolable, having just killed his son for no reason. This incredibly bleak ending differed from the one in King's book, and was met with large amounts of controversy for being totally and irredeemably horrific.
