For what was intended to be a standard blockbuster sequel to J.J.Abrams' hugely successful Star Trek reboot, 'Star Trek: Into Darkness' turned out to be one of the most controversial films of the year. It was a huge critical and box office success but very soon a backlash against certain aspects of the film began to form, illogical changes to lore and trampling over touchstones of the franchise's history were too much for some fans. So much so that a vote at a convention declared 'Into Darkness' the worst Star Trek film ever made. Amongst all the niggles, including the grammar of the title, there were two major controversies that reached beyond the hardcore fans; The first problem was the gratuitous and totally unnecessary shots of Alice Eve stripped to her underwear for no reason at all. The idea of 'something for the dads' is very outdated and this came across as cynical and sexist. Writer Damon Lindelof has since taken to twitter to apologise for the scene coming across as gratuitous. Next Cumberbatch as Khan... or is he? Yes, he obviously is, which made the mystery of Cumberbatch's character being named as John Harrison a bit of a farce before even seeing the film. Later in the film the iconic cry of 'Khaaaaaaaaan' from Wrath of Khan was recycled and given to Spock instead of Kirk which made the film feel like a bad patchwork of old Trek moments.
