12 Despicable Movie Villains Who Stole Every Scene
6. Anton Chigurh - No Country For Old Men
Ah, it's time for a visit from our old friend, Mr Javier Bardem once more. Entering this list having portrayed the calm, calculated, cold and complex, Anton Chigurh.
Chigurh is the hitman with a clear, strict code that he abides by unequivocally. There is something petrifying about those who seldom seemed rushed or in need of acting swiftly.
Every move, every word, every facial expression, every look... everything to his breathing pattern are chosen with a purpose. A measured and unnerving character, Chigurh is able to masterfully handle conversations - however awkward for his counterpart - in such a way that it lulls them into a false sense of security and intrigue.
As with some others on our list, Chigurh lets others feel comfortable before changing tone in the blink of an eye on seemingly random moments, however in his case he does not explode with rage, he carefully and slowly kills his target in what he feels is a mercy, or even fate-decided act. He does not appear to enjoy extended suffering, and so acts out as such.
Bardem's natural presence, the aesthetic of the character and the deliberate nature of his methods strike a chord with audiences that leave a real sense of unease. There's a tangible feeling of discomfort that means you cannot lose sight of him. He commands centre stage as the smartest, and most fearsome, person in any situation. Possibly Bardem's best work, the "flip of the switch" demeanour of the character is mesmerising.
