12 Directors Who Admitted They Ruined Their Own Movies
7. David Ayer Regrets Not Making Joker The Main Villain In Suicide Squad
Although Suicide Squad is a box-office success, the movie received a lot of bad reviews from critics. One of the reasons was the fact that Joker is not the main villain. Instead, the iconic character is sidelined and only appears on screen for less than ten minutes. Not only did this anger fans who felt duped because Joker was heavily featured in the movie's marketing, but it also makes the story unconvincing.
The director behind Suicide Squad, David Ayer, apparently agrees with the criticism. He expressed his regret via Twitter, "Believe me. I agonize over this. Yes. Joker should have been main bad guy."
The decision to cut Joker from most of the movie apparently came later in the production phase. According to Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn in the movie, she and co-star Jared Leto shot "almost an entire film" about Harley and Joker's backstory. Most of the footage, however, never made it into the final film.
David Ayer apparently still regrets the decision and tweeted that given a time machine, he would've made Joker the main villain and created a more grounded story.
