12 Directors You Didn't Know Almost Made Comic Book Movies

7. Darren Aronofsky - Batman: Year One & The Wolverine

Shortly before Christopher Nolan took the world by storm with 2005's Batman Begins, Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) was recruited to adapt Frank Miller's legendary 1987 graphic novel Batman: Year One, with Miller himself co-writing the script and Christian Bale approached to play Batman.

It didn't happen, of course, and the rest is history. However, in 2011, Aronofsky then became attached to direct the second solo Wolverine movie, The Wolverine, but ultimately bailed in order to spend more time with his family. The end result, directed by James Mangold was...pretty good? Until the third act, anyway.

Would They Have Worked?: Aronofsky's track record speaks for itself, so we'll go with a resounding "yes".
