Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn’s 2006 horror comedy is certainly less disturbing than some of the flicks listed here, but in combining the director’s pitch black sense of humour with some sticky—and ambitiously large-scale—body horror, the flick is still one of sci-fi’s most disgusting movies, and the silliness of proceedings does little to blunt how grotesque a lot of its imagery is.

Yes, we may laugh at seeing a sheriff’s deputy split in two, but the sight of Michael Rooker’s small town bully gradually becoming absorbed by a pustule ridden mass of flesh is seriously stomach-turning, and attempting a re-watch of this one—particularly after a large meal—makes for a sobering reminder of just how gross the director’s skilful use of gruesome body horror really is.
