The Twist: Mars-born teenager Gardner (Asa Butterfield) heads to Earth to meet the man he believes to be his father, but when the man insists he isn't Gardner's dad, Gardner runs into the sea and tries to drown himself.

At that moment, the man who took care of Gardner on Mars, Nathaniel (Gary Oldman), appears and helps resuscitate Gardner, revealing himself to be the boy's father, having had a love affair with his mother on Mars, who died while giving birth to him.

The film then ends with the newly-reconciled father and son back on Mars together. How touching.

Why It's Dumb: Much like the Pirates of the Caribbean twist, this just didn't feel at all earned, but more like the sort of desperate, chintzy twist you'd expect to see in a Nicholas Sparks movie.

It was a lousy attempt to enhance the film's already flaccid level of viewer involvement, but was more likely to prompt howling chuckles than flowing tears.
