8. Religulous (2008)
Follow Bill Maher as he travels across the world in search of some of the most prevalent religious organisations and challenges them in a way that only Bill Maher can. He sits with priests, politicians, doctors and even members of his own family - interestingly, he was born to a Catholic father and Jewish mother - and puts to them his view on the whole thing, mainly that he just doesn’t know what to believe, but that he surely won’t place his faith blindly.
This film is never going to change the views of solid religious folk and is enough to offend the like, but that is kind of the point. The kinds of things that Maher attacks are - what the non-religious amongst us may consider - the absurdities of religion and not so much the sentiments around them and he does it in what could almost be mistaken for crassness - of course, there’s nothing unintelligent about his approach.
Bordering on outright comedy, this could easily be passed off as just that - if it wasn’t for the damningly solid arguments that he presents.
When reviewing the film, the great Roger Ebert said "I report faithfully that I laughed frequently. You may very well hate it, but at least you've been informed.”
