6. Dark Days (2000)
A stark portrayal of a group of homeless people, living underneath New York City. What is almost as shocking as the story itself, is the fact that Marc Singer never intended to make this film, he only moved into the tunnels as a lifestyle choice. It was only after some time that he decided to recruit his new friends as crew and rented a 16mm black and white camera. What he captured of their lives is simply remarkable.
Many of the homeless men and women portrayed in this story have made many bad decisions that have led them to hide away from society, away from the rules and law of above ground - but what’s interesting is what seems to be their undying high spirits and true sense of community.
That said, there are scenes that some will find upsetting and the entire picture is stark and grim - but knowing that Singer shared the profits with and helped improve these people’s lives for the better makes it a much easier pill to swallow.
