12 Fantastic Films You Only Remember For One Scene
3. Alien - Chestburster
Alien isn't the most action-packed sci-fi film you'll ever see, but few can match its atmospheric, slow-burning sense of unease. Fewer still can pack a fright quite like the one we find in this scene. During breakfast on the starship Nostromo, crew member Kane (John Hurt) suddenly starts to choke. His colleagues rush to help him, laying him onto the table and holding him down as he begins to convulse. But just as he gasps his last, blood sprays like a geyser from beneath his t-shirt, followed by a strange, noticeably phallic creature emerging from his chest. This creature, with its eyeless head and metallic teeth, then turns to 'face' the crew - who, understandably, are stunned into silence - before, having well and truly stolen the scene, scarpering offscreen with a shriek.
Yorkshireman (hence the surname). Often spotted sacrificing sleep and sanity for the annual Leeds International Film Festival. For a sample of (fairly) recent film reviews, please visit whatsnottoblog.wordpress.com.
