12 Films Ruined By Their Marketing

Though it may seem like ages have passed, a mere decade ago there was this little upstart movie studio in town called Marvel Studios that was desperately trying to make things work. Having just started producing their own films, the studio was taking a huge gamble in releasing their first two films, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, mere months apart from one another.

While Iron Man was a huge hit, Hulk had his work cut out for him. The failed 2003 film was still fresh in audience's minds and to compensate for that, the studio saw fit to basically give people the entire film in the trailers.

The debut trailer was essentially a CliffNotes version of the film, chronicling Banner's time spent on the run and going all the way up to the climactic battle in Harlem. It spoiled the new Hulk design, it spoiled the villain, it spoiled the central plot. Hell, it even spoiled the key suspenseful moment where Banner jumps out of a plain not knowing whether or not he'll Hulk out.

By the time the film reached theaters, audiences had even been subjected to TV ads featuring Robert Downey Jr.'s entire cameo, fully confirming that someone in the marketing department had no faith in the film. Our old radioactive pal may be able to take on entire branches of the army but he was sadly no match for a spoilerific advertising campaign.
