12 Films So Bad That They Killed Off Their Franchise

9. The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Amidst the hype swallowing up Hollywood in the wake of the gangbuster success of The Hunger Games, several dystopian YA novels were suddenly green-lit. Among the most egregious of these offenders was the Divergent series.

Though that's not to say they were flops from the start. The first film did very well for itself, ensuring a bigger budget and some serious studio faith for the impending sequels. They were riding high atop the wave of cultural relevancy the entire genre was enjoying, that would certainly never come to an abrupt end.

Its initial sequel made even more than the first film, which resulted in the franchise following another YA trend of the time, splitting its final book into two films. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything, apparently.

Audiences balked at the third installment, with it absolutely crashing in its opening weekend. Unable to even recoup its budget, the studio had to spring into action and cancel the impending production of the second half of the film. Ever since, the franchise has been reduced to little more than an incredibly embarrassing tale of just how publicly the entire genre of dystopian YA films crashed and burned before our very eyes.
