3. King Of The Ants (2003)
The Film: Written for the screen by Charlie Higson based on his novel of the same name, King of the Ants is a classic revenge story directed by horror veteran Stuart Gordon. The film follows a young LA man named Sean as he struggles to make a living painting houses in the city's suburbs, though his problems are seemingly solved when he meets a developer in need of someone to spy on a man that has been investigating his business. When that man ends up dead, however, getting paid turns out to be the least of Sean's worries.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: The man who brought us cult-classic Re-animator was in similar form with King of the Ants, and director Stuart Gordon was among those praised by the Top Critics for yet another blood-soaked B-movie. Gordon takes his time setting things up, though once the inevitable double crossing is over and the vengeance begins we see the full benefit of his chemistry with leading man Chris McKenna, whose presence is key according to Rotten Tomatoes reviewer David Nusair:
"That Sean's transformation from slacker to hitman is as believable as it is has a lot to do with McKenna's engaging performance. The film marks his stab at a leading role, and he's clearly got the talent and screen presence to hold our interest."
