10. The Tale Of Princess Kaguya (2013)

Princess Kaguya
Studio Ghibli

The Film: This animated masterpiece by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata was the legendary animator's fifth film for the esteemed Japanese studio. It is the tale of a tiny girl found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter and his wife, a girl who rapidly grows into an exquisite young lady, enthralling all who encounter her and living her miracle life to the fullest. As her beauty begins to attract the attention of scores of suitors, however, she must come face to face with the true nature of her bizarre existence.

What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: Ghibli originally intended to release The Tale Of Princess Kaguya alongside Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, though the two films couldn't have been further apart in terms of appearance. The lush, vivid colours used in Miyazaki's film were nowhere to be seen here, with his counterpart opting for a pale, watery pallet that makes for a uniquely beautiful and endlessly fascinating work of art, one that Rotten Tomatoes critic Andrew Osmond sees as being closer to a Disney film than a traditional anime:

"While the characters feel very simplified at times, there are scenes that put great weight on performance and subtle expressions, in a way that's nearer to the classical Disney tradition than most Japanese animation."
